Africa Is Not One Market: A Distributor's Map of Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Francophone West Africa

The IFPI Global Music Report 2026 put Sub-Saharan África's recorded music revenue growth at 15.2% for 2025, tied with the Middle East y North África as the joint second-fastest growing region in the world, behind only América Latina's 17.1%. Streaming carried nearly todo of it.

Those números get quoted in every deck about "the African opportunity." What gets left out is that the deck is describing at least four markets with almost nothing operationally in common: different aplicaciones, different metadata expectations, different payout rails, y different reasons an artist actually gets discovered.

Nigeria

The largest population on the continent y the centre of gravity for Afrobeats globally. Two aplicaciones matter more here than Spotify does: Boomplay, which reports over 90 million monthly active users across África y builds around offline playback y low-data streaming for a mobile-first, often-metered market, y Audiomack, which says it has served over 58 billion Afrobeats streams in Nigeria alone since 2020, with double-digit millions of monthly users in-country.

Discovery here does no run a través de algorithmic playlists the way it does in the US or UK. It runs a través de search, DJ mixes, y short-video, which means a release plan that treats Boomplay y Audiomack as afterthoughts behind Spotify is optimising for the wrong audience.

Sudáfrica

Sudáfrica is the region's anchor by revenue: 78.1% of Sub-Saharan África's recorded music income, per the IFPI, growing 12.9% in 2025 on its own. It is also the market where global platforms behave most like they do everywhere else. YouTube Music y Spotify carry real weight here, amapiano's export success has pulled international attention y playlisting toward Sudáfrican catalogue specifically, y release strategy looks closer to a European market than a Nigerian one.

Treating Sudáfrica y Nigeria as the same "African" release plan misreads both.

Kenia y East África

Kenia is where mobile-money-first commerce was effectively invented, y that historia still shapes how people pay fo und consume music: prepaid, mobile-wallet, low-data by default. Boomplay has real share here too, alongside mdundo, a Nairobi-founded service built specifically around African repertoire y low-bandwidth playback. An East African release plan necesidades both a data-light delivery expectation y a payout model built around mobile wallets rather than a bank card, which is its own problem y merece its own answer.

Francophone África occidental

Togo, Cameroon, Senegal y Côte d'Ivoire run on different rails entirely. French-idioma metadata is no optional here the way it might be treated as an edit-later field elsewhere, y Deezer has a structural head start most Western analysis misses: its long-standing bundling partnership with Orange gives it real distribución inside carrier billing across Francophone África, in a way Spotify has never matched in the region. Mobile money again dominates payout, this time a través de Orange Money y MTN Mobile Money rather than M-Pesa.

Lo que realmente se generaliza

Not much, which is the point. But three things hold across todo four markets.

The home-grown app is no a secondary platform, it is often the primary one. Boomplay, Audiomack, mdundo y Deezer-via-Orange carry more real listening in these markets than a Nigeria-shaped or Kenia-shaped mental model borrowed from a US release plan would predict.

Bajo-data y offline are the default use case, no an edge case. Metered mobile data shapes app choice, streaming quality settings, y even release-day behaviour, y it is worth designing around rather than discovering after the fact.

Payout has to be local or it does no clear. A payment stack built around Visa y a US bank account fails a meaningful share of artists across the region antes a single stream is ever monetised. That is a big enough problem on its own that it gets its own piece.

On the delivery side, el mechanics are more standard than the market differences suggest: Boomplay, Audiomack y Anghami todo take certified DDEX ERN direct via SFTP, with a two-day turnaround on nuevo releases y updates alike. The complexity in African distribución is almost entirely upstream of delivery, in metadata, discovery y payout, no in the DDEX pipe itself.

Frequently Asked Preguntas

Is África a single music market for distribución purposes?

No. Nigeria, Sudáfrica, Kenia y Francophone África occidental each run on different dominant platforms, payout rails y metadata expectations. Sub-Saharan África's recorded music revenue grew 15.2% in 2025 according to the IFPI, but that growth looks completely different market by market.

Which streaming aplicaciones matter most in Nigeria?

Boomplay y Audiomack carry more real listening for Afrobeats than Spotify does in Nigeria. Boomplay reports over 90 million monthly active users across África, y Audiomack says it has served over 58 billion Afrobeats streams in Nigeria alone since 2020.

Why is Sudáfrica treated differently from the rest of Sub-Saharan África?

Sudáfrica accounts for 78.1% of the region's recorded music revenue y grew 12.9% in 2025 on its own, per the IFPI. Global platforms like Spotify y YouTube Music carry real weight there, closer to a European release strategy than a Nigerian one.

Does Deezer have an advantage in Francophone África occidental?

Sí. Deezer's long-standing bundling partnership with Orange gives it distribución inside carrier billing across Francophone África, a structural advantage Spotify has no matched in the region.

Do Boomplay y Soporte de audio direct DDEX entrega?

Sí. Boomplay y Audiomack both accept certified DDEX ERN delivery direct via SFTP, with a two-day turnaround on nuevo releases y metadata updates.
