How to Grow a Distribution Business Without Losing the Stores' Trust

Every distributor wants more artists e more labels. Very few think about what growth does to their standing with the stores until it is already damaged. The stores do não grade a distributor on how many releases it sends. They grade it on what those releases turn out to be: how many are infringing, how many are spam, how many attract artificial streams, e how many come back as complaints.

Growth that brings in bad catalogue is não growth. It is a liability that arrives with a delay.

The stores agora charge for what você let através

This is no longer a reputation question alone. Since April 2024, Spotify has charged labels e distributors per track when it detects flagrant artificial streaming. The charge lands on the distributor, não on the artist who bought the fake streams, e a distributor that passes it on still has to collect it from someone who may already be gone.

Other consequences are harder to ver e cost more: releases held for manual review, slower ingestion, e in the worst cases a loja ending the relationship. A distributor's delivery relationship is its most valuable asset, e every novo signing either protects it or spends some of it.

Vet who você sign, não just what they upload

The cheapest place to stop a problem is antes the account exists. A few questões filter out most of the risk:

  • Who owns the masters? An artist who cannot explain where their recordings came from, ou a "rótulo" whose whole catalogue appeared last month, is a rights dispute waiting to happen.
  • What does the catalogue look like? Hundreds of near-identical tracks, generic titles, ou white-noise e sleep audio from a novo account are classic spam patterns.
  • Where have they distributed antes, e why did they leave? Artists removed by another distributor for fraud tend to move on to the next one.
  • Is AI involved, e is it divulgado? Most stores accept Música assistida por IA. What they act against is undisclosed AI music e AI music imitating a real artist.

Nenhum of this means turning people away by default. It means knowing who você are delivering for.

Check every release, every time

Vetting a signing once is não enough, because the catalogue keeps changing after the account is approved. Every release should pass através the same gate:

  1. Complete metadata e identifiers. No release goes out without a UPC, an ISRC on every track e a record rótulo. Missing codes are the root of most matching e royalty problems later.
  2. Áudio recognition. Scanning audio against a reference database catches uploads of recordings that belong to someone else antes they reach a loja.
  3. AI detection with disclosure. When a track is very likely AI-generated e the uploader has não said so, o release should go back for a disclosure instead of going out.
  4. A human decision at the end. Automated checks should inform the approval, não replace it.

Structure seu roster so it can scale

Operational mess turns into trust problems too. A distributor handling several labels precisa each one to exist as its own entity, with its own name, logo e profile, so the right rótulo name appears on the right release in every loja. If você vender services to seu artists, o terms (how many releases a year, which features are included) should be enforced by the system rather than tracked in a spreadsheet e argued about later.

Como ToneGrid is built for this

ToneGrid runs every release através a two-stage approval. A distributor's own admins review what their artists submit e pass it on. It then goes através ToneGrid's quality check antes anything is delivered to a loja:

  • Every release is scanned for audio recognition através our ACRCloud integration, so recordings that match someone else's catalogue are caught antes entrega.
  • AI detection runs alongside disclosure. A release the detector flags as very likely AI-generated, with no AI disclosure filed, is sent back to the distributor with the reason, instead of being delivered.
  • Final approval requires a UPC, an ISRC on every track e a record rótulo. A release without them cannot be approved.
  • Etiquetas are first-class, each with its own name, logo e profile under the distributor's brand.
  • Artist plans let a distributor vender its own plans to its artists, paid into the distributor's own payment account, with limits such as releases per year aplicado automaticamente.

Growth is the point of running uma empresa de distribuição. The job is making sure the catalogue você add is catalogue the stores are glad to receive.

Frequently Asked Perguntas

Can a distributor be charged for its artists' fake streams?

Sim. Since April 2024, Spotify charges labels e distributors per track when it detects flagrant artificial streaming. The charge is applied to the distributor that delivered the track.

How should a music distributor vet novo artists e labels?
