How to Grow a Distribution Business Without Losing the Stores' Trust

Every distributor wants more artists および more labels. Very few think about what growth does to their standing with the stores until it is already damaged. The stores do ではない grade a distributor on how many releases it sends. They grade it on what those releases turn out to be: how many are infringing, how many are spam, how many attract artificial streams、および how many come back as complaints.

Growth that brings in bad catalog is ではない growth. It is a liability that arrives with a delay.

The stores 今 charge for what お客様 let 経由

This is no longer a reputation question alone. Since April 2024, Spotify has charged labels および distributors per track when it detects flagrant artificial streaming. The charge lands on the distributor, ではない on the artist who bought the fake streams、および a distributor that passes it on still has to collect it from someone who may already be gone.

その他 consequences are harder to 参照 および cost more: releases held for manual review, slower ingestion、および in the worst cases a ストア ending the relationship. A distributor's delivery relationship is its most valuable asset、および every 新着 signing either protects it or spends some of it.

Vet who お客様 sign, ではない just what they upload

The cheapest place to stop a problem is before the account exists. A few questions filter out most of the risk:

  • Who owns the masters? An artist who cannot explain where their recordings came from、または a "label" whose whole catalog appeared last month, is a rights dispute waiting to happen.
  • What does the catalog look like? Hundreds of near-identical tracks, generic titles、または white-noise および sleep audio from a 新着 account are classic spam patterns.
  • Where have they distributed before、および why did they leave? Artists removed by another distributor for fraud tend to move on to the next one.
  • Is AI involved、および is it 開示されている? Most stores accept AI支援の音楽. What they act against is undisclosed AI music および AI music imitating a real artist.

なし of this means turning people away by default. It means knowing who お客様 are delivering for.

Check every release, every time

Vetting a signing once is ではない enough, because the catalog keeps changing after the account is approved. Every release should pass 経由 the same gate:

  1. Complete metadata および identifiers. No release goes out without a UPC, an ISRC on every track および a record label. Missing codes are the root of most matching および royalty problems later.
  2. オーディオ recognition. Scanning audio against a reference database catches uploads of recordings that belong to someone else before they reach a ストア.
  3. AI detection with disclosure. When a track is very likely AI-generated および the uploader has ではない said so、 release should go back for a disclosure instead of going out.
  4. A human decision at the end. Automated checks should inform the approval, ではない replace it.

Structure お客様の roster so it can scale

Operational mess turns into trust problems too. A distributor handling several labels 必要とするもの each one to exist as its own entity, with its own name, logo および profile, so the right label name appears on the right release in every ストア. If お客様 sell services to お客様の artists、 terms (how many releases a year, which features are included) should be enforced by the system rather than tracked in a spreadsheet および argued about later.

ToneGridの is built for this

ToneGrid runs every release 経由 a two-stage approval. A distributor's own admins review what their artists submit および pass it on. It then goes 経由 ToneGrid's quality check before anything is delivered to a ストア:

  • Every release is scanned for audio recognition 経由 our ACRCloud integration, so recordings that match someone else's catalog are caught before 配信。
  • AI detection runs alongside disclosure. A release the detector flags as very likely AI-generated, with no AI disclosure filed, is sent back to the distributor with the reason, instead of being delivered.
  • Final approval requires a UPC, an ISRC on every track および a record label. A release without them cannot be approved.
  • レーベル are first-class, each with its own name, logo および profile under the distributor's brand.
  • Artist plans let a distributor sell its own plans to its artists, paid into the distributor's own payment account, with limits such as releases per year 自動的に適用されます.

Growth is the point of running ディストリビューション事業. The job is making sure the catalog お客様 add is catalog the stores are glad to receive.
